Hawks down a man, down in series - Chicago Tribune

BOSTON ' Marian Hossa was on the ice during warm-ups, and the Blackhawks seemed primed to challenge the Bruins in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

When the puck dropped, Hossa was nowhere to be found, and the Hawks' chances at squaring up the series seemingly disappeared with him.

Looking out of sorts without one of their top players, the Hawks sputtered offensively, hung on for dear life in the defensive zone and were a train wreck on the power play and in the faceoff circle before eventually succumbing to the Bruins 2-0 in front of a crowd of 17,565 at TD Garden.

The Bruins grabbed a 2-1 edge in the series with Game 4 on Wednesday night in Boston.

"It's something we were prepared for all day that he might not play," captain Jonathan Toews said of Hossa, who is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury. "It happens sometimes. You're missing one of your best players and you've got to find a way to play without him."

The Hawks were unable to find that way as they didn't muster much offensive pressure on Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask, who made 28 saves to record his third shutout of the playoffs and 19th overall in his career. The Hawks' goal-less skid reached 122 minutes, 26 seconds as they fell for the second consecutive game and now must find a way to halt the Bruins' momentum or face a deep hole before returning to Chicago for Game 5.

"We had a lot of the play and pushed the pace, and it just seemed like for whatever reasons we can't capitalize on our chances," defenseman Duncan Keith said. "Time is running out. We have to get a goal. We just have to come out with a big game next game and find a way to get a win."

History is not on the Hawks' side as teams capturing Game 3 after splitting the first two games of the finals have gone on to win the Stanley Cup 84 percent of the time since the best-of-seven format was adopted in 1939.

Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron scored to provide the offense and Rask did the rest for the Bruins as he bested Hawks goalie Corey Crawford (33 saves).

The Hawks went 0-for-5 on the power play and have failed on all 11 opportunities with a man advantage in the series. Also not helping matters was a dreadful night in the faceoff circle as the Hawks lost 40 of 56 draws ' including 6 of 7 on the power play.

"It's about us," Toews said. "We've just got to be hungrier for the puck sometimes. And on the power play, we can help each other out more, keep more plays alive and not let them break out of their zone so easily."

Bruins coach Claude Julien put together a line of Paille, Chris Kelly and Tyler Seguin during Game 2, and it continued to pay dividends when Paille scored to give the Bruins the lead early in the second.

Dave Bolland couldn't corral a puck deep in the Hawks zone and Paille pounced on it, spun and beat Crawford to the glove side.

Later in the period, the Hawks ran into penalty troubles, and it cost them. Moments after an 11-second, two-man advantage ended, Jaromir Jagr sent a terrific cross-ice feed through traffic to Bergeron, who was camped by the left post. Bergeron fired it past a lunging Crawford, and that was more than enough offense for the Bruins.

"Especially against a team like Chicago, you've got to go hard every shift," Bergeron said. "Our start was something we talked about, and we carried that on into the second and third periods as well. Obviously, it wasn't perfect by any means, but at this point of the year you've got to take the wins and move on and focus on the next game."

It remains to be seen whether that next game will include Hossa. Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said after Game 3, "We're hopeful he'll be ready for (Game 4)."

Long line of fierce thunderstorms could spawn derecho - CBS News

WASHINGTON A gigantic line of powerful thunderstorms could affect one-in-five Americans Wednesday as it rumbles from Iowa to Maryland packing hail, lightning and tree-toppling winds.

Meteorologist are warning that the continuous line of storms may even spawn an unusual weather event called a derecho, which is a massive storm of strong straight-line winds spanning at least 240 miles. Wednesday's storms are also likely to generate tornadoes and cause power outages that will be followed by oppressive heat, said Bill Bunting, operations chief at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.

The risk of severe weather in Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, is roughly 45 times higher than on a normal June day, Bunting said. Detroit, Baltimore, Washington, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Louisville, Ky., have a risk level 15 times more than normal. All-told, the area the weather service considers to be under heightened risk of dangerous weather includes 64 million people in 10 states.

"It's a pretty high threat," Bunting said, who also warned that the storms will produce large hail and dangerous lightning. "We don't want to scare people, but we want them to be aware."

Wednesday "might be the worst severe weather outbreak for this part of the country for the year," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director at Weather Underground.

You can have tornadoes and a derecho at the same time, but at any given place Wednesday the straight-line winds are probably more likely.

Last year, a derecho caused at least $1 billion in damage from Chicago to Washington, killing 13 people and leaving more than 4 million people without power, according to the weather service. Winds reached nearly 100 mph in some places and, in addition to the 13 people who died from downed trees, another 34 people died from the heat wave that followed in areas without power.

Derechoes, with winds of at least 58 mph, occur about once a year in the Midwest. Rarer than tornadoes but with weaker winds, derechoes produce damage over a much wider area.

Wednesday's storm probably won't be as powerful as 2012's historic one, but it is expected to cause widespread problems, Bunting said.

The storms are the type that will move so fast that "by the time you see the dark sky and distant thunder you may have only minutes to get to safe shelter," Bunting said.

The storms will start late morning or early afternoon in eastern Iowa, hit Chicago by early afternoon and move east at about 40 mph, Bunting said. If the storm remains intact after crossing the Appalachian Mountains, which would be rare for a derecho, it should hit the Washington area by late afternoon or early evening, he said.

For Washington, Philadelphia and parts of the Mid-Atlantic the big storm risk continues and even increases a bit Thursday, according to the weather service.

Love this stand! So easy to put together! Was a bit suprised the shelves are glass, didn't see that in the discription, but otherwise very very pleased with it! Looks beautiful, is very sturdy, and can't beat the Love it!!!!!!!!

Man, are they not kidding about being easy to set up! This was easy peasy folks, but would be easier with two The box is very heavy, so I manhandled it into the garage, leaned it up on end, then cut the box so the front would open like a I just pulled the components out that Well packaged! In fact, that was the hardest part of setting it up - getting it out of the box!The back is black metal, and the side panels are attached to that and swing There are three metal crossbars that then snap into place across the The top one has two additional supports that snap into the back The shelves are glass, and a smoky color, with the top shelf almost It looks very good and while the fit of the crossbeams isn't flush all the way around, you don't notice it and frankly for the money it's worth the The color of the cherry wood sides and front is a bit darker than our other furniture, and this is a rather contemporary look, but still works with our furniture very It's a solid piece, and we are very happy with the purchase!

Critics: 'The Purge' an attack on Tea Party, NRA - Fox News

    • Ethan Hawke bunkers down in 'The Purge'
    • ROTTEN TOMATOES: Weekend box office preview

LOS ANGELES ' In the new Ethan Hawke thriller 'The Purge," the year is 2022, and the United States is run by a bunch of multinational corporations called the 'New Founding Fathers of America.'The nation is ravaged by crime and overcrowded prisons, so in a quest to curb overpopulation and get rid of unsavories, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period where anything goes in the streets.

Known as 'The Purge,' all criminal activity ' including murder, brutal violence and in this movie, a sinister home invasion ' is legal, all emergency services and calls are suspended, and the only rules are that harming high-ranking government officials and using 'Class 4' weaponry (bombs and grenades) are strictly prohibited.

But while the plot may seem on its surface like any of hundreds of other futuristic hellscape directorial visions from "Clockwork Orange" to "Oblivion," "The Purge" has been dubbed by some a thinly veiled attack on the Tea Party and National Rifle Association, and has some critics rolling their eyes.

'Director James DeMonaco makes it clear the movie is a direct attack on the NRA, an organization filled with millions of law-abiding gun owners. The loony left's reflexive hatred of the 2nd Amendment is founded in the concept that people who don't break the law are somehow evil for exercising the Constitutional rights,' Dan Gainor, VP of Business and Culture at the Media Research Institute told FOX411's Pop Tarts column. ''The Purge' is also an obvious attack on the Tea Party and Christians.'

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, DeMonaco said the leadership of his 2022 United States was indeed based on the NRA, although he tried to use a light touch.

"I layered in these New Founding Fathers, this regime that we voted into power at some point, some kind of NRA-thing that took over the country," he said. "But I kind of left that to the audience. I think sometimes in my writing I try to spoon feed too much, it's better to let the audience make their own decisions on things."

He also said the film's ultraviolent "purge" was based on what he saw happening in the country now.

"When I was on my last movie, I was living in France for six months. I started noticing that the news was so very different than watching the news in America, it was just strange. And I lived in Canada right before that and it was completely different as well. Their news was just about us, because they had nothing to report," he told the website. "So when we watch the news here, I joke to my wife 'It's like The Purge every night.' I don't know what the f**k is going on out there, but it's like the godd**n Purge!

We caught up with the movie's star at an interview junket promoting "The Purge," and Hawke said the plot is indeed social commentary.

'It's not such a far-fetched idea that rich people are totally cut off from the adversity and murder. We sit there on a treadmill and watch and flip and see what's happening all over the world and other countries, and a lot of that damage is created by our affluence and what is our level of participation in that,' he told us. 'And how do we feel about that, and what are we going to do about it? And the rest of us just change the channel.'

Hawke said the movie addressed the current political and social climate.

'It's the fun of science fiction in a way that it forces you to think about political ideas without 'who are you going to vote for?'" he said. "You get to think without anyone having an agenda for gun control or not.'

Documentary filmmaker and media critic John Ziegler said regardless of its message, "The Purge"just isn't very good.

"Worse than being an apparent attack on limited government and the Tea Party movement, the plot just seems really stupid, even for Hollywood,' Ziegler said. "If they are going to be so biased they should at least be good."

"The Purge" has drawn mixed reviews, with movie review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes giving it a middling 53 percent.

The L.A. Times called it an 'emptying experiences' of 'cheap scares and violent showdowns,' Seattle Times noted that 'no real answers' were provided by the filmmaker, and that it was simply a presentation of a 'bizarre dystopian future,' while Time Out New York suggested that the film 'morphs into a dull version of 'Straw Dog.''

However, plenty of other critics have 'The Purge' the thumbs up.

Film.com applauded it as a 'blunt takedown of 1%-er politics masquerading as a home invasion picture,' the Birmingham Mail called it a 'very clever thriller and a thought-provoking social commentary rolled into one,' and the Village Voice observed that the 'set-up is arresting, the domestic scenes well observed and acted," and that the 'late-film twist isn't a surprise, exactly, but it is delicious.'

Gainor, however, said the movie is just Hollywood's latest attempt at demonizing America.

'Once again Hollywood tries to make money from Americans by bashing America. The entertainment industry loves trying to depict the U.S. as the bad guy. Movies used to show the good things about our nation, now Hollywood execs clearly avoid that whenever possible,' he said. 'It's almost funny that a schlock movie filled with violence is used to criticize Americans for being violent.'

The first pair of stands I bought (from Amazon also) were the same price, but much flimsier in I guess they were better for really light, mini, plastic htib I'm using Sony SS-B1000 bookshelves, which are larger and heavier, so back they These are of a more industrial design, and are perfect for my speakers (these stands claim to handle up to 30 the first pair, these came completely They arrived neatly boxed and The shipping was quick and non They aren't the prettiest for in home use, but that's not an issue for me at There are plates at the top with 4 holes at the corners to screw your speakers to the Right there, their use is limited because if you have really nice expensive speakers, you're probably not about to drill holes into them no matter how great the stands But for a pair Sony's, I'm willing to I guess you could use double sided tape if you really wanted, but then you'd have tape glue on your speakers, and I wouldn't trust that the glue might not dry out or a firm bump to the stand might not knock them small issue was that if I attatched the speaker flush to the plate, I wouldn't be able to run the wire down through the center of the So when I went into the hardware store (carrying one speaker and the top of one stand)to have the hardware guy sell me the correct screws, I also had him sell me 16 rubber washers to raise the speaker about 1/2 inch above the (Each corner got 2 washers, I was kind of dreading trying this approach because I was sure the washers would fly out when I tried to pass the screws through, or something else wouldn't had a friend drill the holes into the speakers for me, and voila-the washers didn't fly and the wires were passed through the poles Now they're perfectly sitting on top of these stands looking clean as a The bottom plate is raised from the floor with rubber feet, so the wire passes out My Sony SA-W2500 sub sits on the floor next to the left stand completing the you want to try this, just remember to remove the plastic cap on the bottom of the top tube so the wire can go locking knob works fine, but it's just a plastic knob on a screw, so I wouldn't use more strength than necessary when tightening They're stable enough for my little bookshelf speakers in my home (they're raised up) but I don't think you could raise 30 pound speakers with Maybe if the 30 pounders were on them unraised, they'd be I removed a star because I had to modify them to run the wires However, I would reccomend these stands as a good choice for 30 bucks if you don't mind drilling your speakers, and don't mind the commercial Perfect for casual environments such as a dorm or a bachelor pad, using less expensive

I am using these speaker stands to hold a pair of jbl extreme monitors out on my screened These are small metal speakers and I am keeping them secured on the stands with just some blu-tack No problems with holding these There are holes in the mounts if you are looking for a more secure I experimented with trying to mount a large pair of bookshelf speakers (sony The base of the stands turned out to be too small, they wanted to fall They did fine with a pair of sony ss-b1000 speakers which are smaller and are often used as surround Can't fault the stands for not handling the larger speakers as they are clearly labeled for surround sound Don't buy these if you need to mount speakers any wider than seven inches at the base, they might fall one thing that I can fault them for is that the metal poles can be used to run wires inside to hide them, but the base of the poles is solid with no holes, so one has to drill through the bottom of the poles below the base in order to be able to run wires up through Therefore I give these stands four stars instead of

Handzus Helped Shape Blackhawks and the Kings - New York Times

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

Michal Handzus, right, has been a mainstay on the Blackhawks' playoff-leading penalty kill.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ' Michal Handzus's nickname, Zus, does not refer to the Greek god, but he has seemingly been omnipresent for both teams in the Western Conference finals.

Handzus centers the Chicago Blackhawks' second line and has been a mainstay on their playoff-leading penalty kill. He also played four seasons in Los Angeles and had a significant role in the formative years of a Stanley Cup champion.

'He really left his imprint on a lot of the players that are with L.A. today,' said Terry Murray, the former Kings coach, who was with the club from 2008 to 2012. 'Kopitar, Jarret Stoll, Dustin Brown and Matt Greene, the Kings' leadership group, I know that he left a big impression with those young men and really helped them to become the great players that they are today.'

Handzus, 36, played for the Blackhawks briefly in 2006-7, appearing in only eight games and sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament. But it was enough time for both parties to seek out each other near the trade deadline this year as Chicago acquired him for a draft pick on April 1.

Handzus had posted only two points in 28 games with San Jose, which he paired with a minus-9 rating, all while his birth certificate continued to gray and fray.

But the Blackhawks had competition for Handzus and were enthused to land a versatile veteran forward. They have been rewarded handsomely for their confidence.

Going into Game 5 on Thursday night, Handzus has eight points and a plus-5 rating during the postseason. He had a five-game scoring streak as Chicago surged from a 3-1 series deficit to topple Detroit and then took a 2-0 series lead over Los Angeles.

Handzus was held off the score sheet in a 3-1 loss in Game 3 on Tuesday, but he found ways to impact the game. He had three hits, two blocked shots and strong defensive plays.

'He's one of those guys that fits in seamlessly,' Chicago Coach Joel Quenneville said. 'He's very aware of what his role is, what the expectations of him are and fulfilling anything that can contribute to a team's success.'

Handzus has moved to the second line with the prolific scorers Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane. Yet Handzus has been anything but a passenger, consistently making offensive plays, winning face-offs and providing a steadying presence on defense. In his last deep, successful playoff run with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2004, he turned in a similar performance while skating primarily on the fourth line with the enforcer Donald Brashear and the checking forward Radovan Somik.

'It doesn't matter where you play,' Handzus said. 'You don't complain, you play. You make your mark, for the team.'

Whether on the fourth line or the first, in practice or in games, Handzus carries the same workmanlike approach.

That consistency across all situations was on display in Game 2 when Handzus slid across the ice powerfully to close a sizable gap and absorb a Slava Voynov slap shot into his midsection. At the time, the Blackhawks had a nearly insurmountable 4-1 lead in the final moments of their victory.

'He does things the right way, all of the time, every day so he gets into a game situation and it's an instinctive part of his game,' Murray said.

The influence of Handzus goes deeper than his direct ties to the Kings and the Blackhawks. Handzus also helped develop his Blackhawks linemate Patrick Sharp and Kings forwards Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Justin Williams as members of the Flyers early in their careers. Sharp remembered Handzus's strong example in Philadelphia and said that he had set it again in short order with Chicago.

'He's a guy that can play in every situation,' Sharp said. 'He has an offensive touch that he probably doesn't get enough credit for. He's good on face-offs, can play defensively, can play special teams. But the thing he's added to our team more than anything is leadership. He says the right things at the right time.'

Murray said Handzus's presence was similar to having an extra coach on staff in Los Angeles.

'He was very observant about team play,' Murray said. 'He had great ideas, great suggestions and strong opinions on how things should be. I listened to him very closely. My final year in L.A., he was a player that I missed greatly.'

Handzus can play center or left wing and in all situations. Along with his versatility, he has remained a sought-after commodity thanks to his preternatural on-ice awareness, long reach, sound positioning and his consistent preparation, all of which set strong examples for his teammates. Murray and Quenneville praised him as 'always being in the right spot' and there was ubiquitous appreciation of his effectiveness with younger players.

'Michal is great to learn from,' Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger, 23, said. 'You can look at him, how professional in everything he does.'

Handzus acknowledged that this could be his last deep playoff run, although he said he approached it with the same intensity he did as a 27-year-old with Philadelphia. Whenever he does retire, his former coaches seemed to agree that he had a bright future in hockey.

'I think if Michal Handzus wants to be a coach, he'll step right in and do a great job at it,' Murray said. 'I have visions of him going back to Slovakia and being the head of the hockey federation in Slovakia. He has that kind of ability to see the big picture and to know what it takes in order for a program to develop young players all the way through from the beginning of hockey to the Olympic team.

It seems that Stephen Belafonte is every inch the attentive husband, particularly on his wife Mel B's birthday.

The film producer treated the X Factor judge to a day at the beach for her birthday, bringing champagne and sun tan oil to celebrate the occasion.

And if toasting Mel's 38th birthday with a cool glass of bubbly wasn't enough, Stephen made sure Mel didn't burn by rubbing her with the tanning oil.

Tending to her every need: Stephen Belafonte rubbed sun tan oil into every inch of his wife Mel B's body as she celebrated her birthday on the beach in Malibu

Stephen made sure that not an inch of Mel's flesh was left uncovered and paid particular attention to her bottom.

Mel looked far younger than her years in the bright red bikini and showed off a figure that is the envy of women half her age.

As well as ample curves, the Spice Girl has a super-toned stomach and gym-honed limbs.

Doing a diligent job: The film producer made sure that Mel was completely covered in the oil paying particular attention to her derriere

Who can blame him: It seems that Stephen couldn't keep his hands off his beautiful wife as they soaked up the sunshine in Malibu

Missed a spot? The Spice Girl checked Stephen's handiwork and showed off her toned figure at the same time

Mel made plenty of effort for her birthday at the beach last Wednesday, dressing up for the occasion with freshly styled hair and lashings of make-up.

Ignoring the soaring temperatures Melanie sported heavy eye make-up including dark brown eyeshadow, thick liner and piles of mascara.

Stephen and Mel may have been married since 2007 but seemed like a young couple enjoying the honeymoon stage of their relationship during their day out.

Kiss of gratitude: Stephen was rewarded for his efforts in spoiling Mel when she gave him a big smooch

It's my birthday and I'll get wet if I want to: Mel was seen running back and forth from the shore to the sand

And while Stephen couldn't keep his hands off his wife, it seems he also couldn't resist indulging in some PDA.

The couple were seen smooching as they toasted Mel's birthday together.

Well it is a celebration! Mel and Stephen were seen sharing a bottle of champagne as they strolled along the sand

Red hot siren: Mel wore a bright red bikini and gold detailing that showed off her fabulous shape

Honeymoon period still going strong: The pair, who wed in 2007, still seem to be very much in love and Mel beamed at her husband

Mel recently spoke out about why she prefers America's Got Talent to The X Factor and said: 'Because you can be watching a great singer and then you're watching 30 people on stage doing clogging and then watching a magician making something disappear.'

'I mean, it really is that diverse. I think it is just more entertaining when it is all around, and you just don't know what to expect.'

Speaking about her fellow judges she told SheKnows.com: 'Me and Heidi (Klum) have known each other for awhile, but Howard (Mandel) and I actually met when I went on his show 16 years ago, and I found him completely inappropriate, which I absolutely love.'

Celebrate! Stephen made Mel giggle as he sprayed the champagne into the air

Chillaxing: Mel was seen putting down a towel to lie down own as she made the most of soaring temperatures

Bit made up for the beach! Mel wore lashings of make-up for her birthday and even had her hair styled for the occasion

Can't resist: Mel couldn't get a moment's peace and was soon joined by her husband as she sunbathed

Having a splashingly good time: Mel was seen running around on the sand

LeBron James needs help from rest of 'Big Three' for Heat to advance to NBA ... - Yahoo! Sports

LeBron James reacts in frustration during Game 6. (Getty)

INDIANAPOLIS -- As the final buzzer sounded, these Miami Heat pushed to the brink in the Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron James refused to wait a moment before beginning a determined and deliberate process of elevating his decaying Miami Heat. One by one, they walked out of the failure of Game 6, into the uncertainty of a Game 7, and James stood at mid-court clapping, cheering and cajoling his fading, failing teammates as they passed him on the way into the losing locker room.

"This is where your brotherhood gets strengthened," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Or, perhaps, this is where the team that was supposed to be basketball's greatest modern dynasty lets a championship destiny perish for the second time in three years.

After a 91-77 loss on Saturday night, the Heat march into a Game 7 with an understanding that they're no longer constructed for victory unless LeBron James plays out of his mind, plays out of this world. That happens ' happens a lot ' but this becomes a slippery slope for the Heat's championship chances when that becomes a necessity for victory.

[Related: Pacers ride stifling defense to dominant Game 6 win]

Three years ago, the Big Three brashly introduced themselves on a rising stage, stepping out of the smoke and into the clear. Now, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh come out of the smoke coughing and wheezing and doubled over, no longer standing shoulder to shoulder with James.

The best player in the world remains relentless in his public support and belief of his co-stars, but he didn't indulge his close friend's delusion of the circumstances of the Heat's playoff demise. Dwyane Wade reacts during the second half of Game 6. (AP)

"We have to do a better job of getting opportunities for me and Chris to succeed," Wade said.

Wade missed layup upon layup, leaving eight, maybe 10 points on the floor. Over and over, Wade reached the rim, but couldn't close on the most elementary of finishes. Better job of getting opportunities for him? That's a code for blaming his coach and sparing himself the reality of his responsibilities.

James refused to play the part of an enabler on Saturday night. This is time for self-reliance, time for truth telling. He's lent himself to be a cheerleader, to keep encouraging his teammates, keep telling them that he believes in them. His job isn't to tell lies or manufacture fairy tales.

"I am able to replay a lot of plays in my head," James said, and soon he started to list ' one by one ' the circumstance of every, easy Wade miss on Saturday night. No video clips needed, James remembered them all.

Above everything, James understands that even his greatness can't overcome Wade and Bosh missing 15 of 19 shots for the game, a formula for failure with the way the Pacers pound the Heat on the boards, pound them inside.

"We can state the obvious: They're both struggling," James said.

Yes, Wade's knee has been troublesome for weeks; Bosh turned an ankle in the series. They're still commanded to find a way, because champions do.

"My rhythm seems off," Bosh said. "It's been like that the whole series."

This is no time for rhythm, only results. The Pacers' David West played with a 103-degree fever, a league source told Yahoo! Sports, and somehow he delivered on a night that started out with him missing seven straight shots, with his coach telling him, "You have nothing tonight" and trying to take him out of the game.

West refused to sit and played his part in pushing the Heat back to Miami for a Game 7. If the Heat are still going to get past Indiana on Monday night, there promises to be a terrific toll taken on them with the San Antonio Spurs awaiting in the NBA Finals. Yes, Boston pushed Miami to a Game 7 a year ago, but Bosh had returned late in the series and Miami gathered momentum as those conference finals unfolded. Now, they gather doubt.

[Video: Pacers' Paul George delivers crushing dunk on Heat's Chris Bosh]

Chris Andersen comes back for Game 7, and history suggests that Wade loves creating these desperate scenarios for himself ' only to rise again to the cheers of the adoring South Florida masses. And yet, to watch these Heat now, it is impossible to imagine how they won 27 straight games this season. That feels like a different team, a different season.

This is a grind for Miami, dominance left far, far back in the distance. This is sheer survival now. So yes, James played the part of the cheerleading, optimist leader late Saturday night, professing a belief in his heart when perhaps a different truth about his teammates exists in his eyes.

"Those guys are professionals, as championships, we'll figure it out," James said. "And me as the leader, I'll have to help them figure it out."

David West battles for the ball with LeBron James during the second half. (AP)Whatever revelations transform Wade and Bosh between games 6 and 7, whatever they draw upon to salvage this series, make no mistake: The burden on LeBron James to carry this roster has never been so extraordinary, the presumption of Heat victory never so uncertain.

Before they left the floor, James had started to prepare these Miami Heat for Monday and a most unmistakable mission: Sparing themselves the embarrassment of a second collapse in three seasons, sparing themselves of history remembering this team not as a dynasty for the ages, but one of sport's great disappointments.

Three years ago, the stage rose, and the smoke spit out and the Big Three emerged to change championship basketball forever in the NBA. Only now, Miami is wobbling the way those old Cleveland Cavaliers used to this time of year, when the genius of LeBron James couldn't overcome the pedestrian play surrounding him. He's far more equipped to handle all that now, but rest assured he never came to Miami believing that he had to pitch perfect games to advance in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

So here comes Game 7 for the Miami Heat now, here comes everything for a franchise fighting to hold off the Indiana Pacers and advancing age, fighting to hold off 2014 free agency and a forever feeling of failure should they let this series ' and maybe this entire era ' slip away.
